Rep. Helen Tan, House Committee on Health Chairperson, files bill for the elimination of Trans Fat in the Philippine food supply

Rep. Angelina “Helen” Tan, district representative of Quezon (4th district), has filed House Bill No. 7934, “AN ACT TO PROTECT FILIPINOS FROM THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF TRANS-FATTY ACIDS” or the Trans Fat Free Philippines Act on Wednesday, October 28, 2020.

Rep. Tan highlighted in her explanatory note the need to have an integrated and comprehensive approach to ensure that all Filipinos are health literate, provided with healthy living conditions, and protected from hazards and risks that could affect their health. Rep. Tan who spearheaded the passage of Republic Act No. 11223 or the Universal Health Care Act in 2019, now seeks to eliminate trans fat as part of “a healthcare model that provides all Filipinos access to a comprehensive set of quality and cost-effective, promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative health services without causing financial hardship and prioritizes the needs of the population who cannot afford such services.”The proposed legislation is suppo…
