PLDT lauds ‘unbreakable spirit’ of PH enterprises amid challenging times

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented immense challenges to industries around the world. With mobility restrictions in place, business owners had to rethink their operations and adjust to navigate the uncertainties in the new normal. Although some companies were able to adapt and seamlessly shift to the new norm, the process was not easy with many struggling with financial losses and temporary business closures. A survey from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) released September last year reported that the Philippine economy experienced the worst impacts of the pandemic. For the 5th year anniversary of Upstart Productions, they are staging the Tony Award winning “Into the Woods”, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine.

Upstart Producer and the Director of the upcoming musical Joel Trinidad admit that he loves dearly the said play, and when he see the venue, Kasalikasan Garden in Bonifacio Global City, he only think of Into the woods that fit the said place.

Trinidad also said that he have no idea, the said musical becoming a Disney movie that was shown in theaters recently, thus he is not making ride on it popularity. However this Filipino adaptation will tell the complete story and all the songs will be perform on stage.

“We have all the songs that’s not in the movie, our production will give something new, something unique that they never seen in any production.” Trinidad added.

Cast as the witch is the singer Rachel Alejandro, Joel’s father the great actor Noel Trinidad will play as the story teller of the play.  During the press conference last Feb 3, 2015 at the Picasso Boutique Residences in Makati City, majority of its cast admit the songs for the play are hard to sung, but they embrace it since they love the play and it’s a challenge for their chosen craft.

“Throughout the musical, there are so many parts where words are fast changing and tongue twisting, and I don’t rap usually, but I love it, it’s so much fun”, Alejandro said.

Into the woods will have 8 runs, the schedules are Feb 21, 22 and 28, and March 1, 7, 8, 14, and 15. All at 6 in the evening at Kasalikasan garden in BGC. Ticket price range from P1, 200 for VIP, P1,100 for Orchestra and P1,000 for Gallery. Tickets are now available in Ticketworld.

Trinidad informs us that he did cast a real sisters to play actual sisters in the play, a real life couple to act husband and wife, plus different celebrities to play the giant in every performances. The story based on the book is as is and not change however he did some revisions in presenting it.

“The overall concept is different from the original play, it’s a slumber party where a bunch of people are playing role, set in backyard, it’s a dream like quality, the whole time they are in pajamas”, added Trinidad.

Here are the complete cast of Into the woods the musical, Rob Atadero, Renee Chan, Kay Balajadua-Liggayu, Jillian Ita-As, Charley Magalit, Lorenz Martinez, Julienne Mendoza, Jill Peña, Justine Peña, Mica Pineda, Gemini Quintos, Noel Rayos, George Schulze, Only Torres, Nicky Triviño, Sheila Valderama-Martinez, Chino Viguillas, and  Robie Zialcita.

Into the woods was last seen in Philippine theater wayback 1991 by Repertory Phils. This year’s version is choreograph by Tristan Cheng and musical direction by Dingdong Fiel.
